In 1998 I began the first Armonia Health Promotion class. I prepared lectures on infectious diseases, pneumonia, respiratory problems, parasitic infections, diarrhea and dehydration issues and went to Mexico to hold my first class with about 25 students.
The next year I enlisted two other doctors, David Burkley, M.D. and Karen Bender, M.D. and my wife Jane. The four of us taught health care and health promotion for seven years.
One of the students, to my amazement, said “This is the best opportunity to learn I have ever had”. His thirst for knowledge was humbling and helped me to understand that education meant empowerment, a release from poverty and a better life. Armonia Ministries, and Saul Cruz, have understood and used this principle over the last 20 years. Now in Oaxaca his student residence and high school program is in full swing. Already nine students have entered University.
From these Health Promotion classes, and observations of progress I came to understand the meaning of “Paso a Paso”. Progress in improving the health of a poor population and in education and empowerment of the poor must occur slowly and deliberately, “Step by Step”. Paso a Paso. My Blog is named “Paso a Paso” to drive home this point.
